Food Access & Wellness Peer Support Volunteer
As a Food Access & Wellness Peer Support Volunteer, you will play a vital role in supporting food security initiatives for vulnerable adults in the community. This role is perfect for individuals with lived experience who are passionate about food justice, wellness, and community care.
You will help organize and deliver food hampers, connect community members with food access resources, and foster relationships with local organizations and businesses to source donations, sales, and giveaways. This peer-led approach ensures we meet people where they are, with dignity and respect. Requirements:Lived or living experience with mental health, substance use, or navigating poverty and systemic barriers is an asset.Compassionate, reliable, and community-minded.Comfortable working with vulnerable adults in a non-judgmental, peer-support capacity.Ability to organize and manage basic logistics (e.g., deliveries, tracking resources).Strong communication and interpersonal skills.Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for hamper delivery.Criminal Record Check required (OWAG will assist with this process).Ability to lift and carry food hampers (up to 25 lbs).Commitment to confidentiality, cultural safety, and anti-oppression practices.
Key Responsibilities: Organize and assist with the packing and distribution of food hampers to community members in need. Deliver hampers in a compassionate, non-judgmental manner to vulnerable adults. Research and share food security resources such as: Community food sales & giveaways Coupons and discount programs Local donation opportunities Build relationships with local businesses and partners to encourage food donations and support. Maintain accurate records of hamper deliveries and community contacts. Provide peer-based emotional support during interactions, using a trauma-informed approach. Collaborate with OWAG team members to identify gaps in food security supports. Uphold OWAG’s values of equity, dignity, and cultural competence in all interactions.
